Onboard footage of the Ferrari F50 at Suzuka track. Pay attention on how the driver shifts down by double clutching and applying the heel-toe shifting technique. Simply beautiful! There is also something very curious in that footage: see how the driver taps on the brake pedal right before the end of some straights in order to have pedal pressure enough. And what about the sound, uh? Astonishing! Enjoy the foot cam!!!

He is defo double-clutching
December 30th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
actually it is.. If you watch the gear lever, after the first minute he does a double-clutch down shift.. and again at around 1:40. It it completely useless in this car, but so are these videos from japan…

lol not double-clutching. It wouldn’t even make sense to do so since I’m pretty sure the F50’s gearbox has synchros. Unless they modded it with the transmission out of an 18-wheeler o_O

Yeah, in fact yuyueyuyue is right about him double clutching earlier, it’s just hard to see and he doesn’t blip the throttle while in neutral. My bad.

the last corner he did double clutching
December 30th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
true, he did go down a few gears on the first corner, but he did pump the clutch like 4 times…
December 30th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
he downshifted from 5 to 3 for the first corner.
that’s why he did two double de-clutch moves.
just like you said, he released the cluth with the transmission in neutral while bliping the gas and then engaged it for the next lower gear.
he pressed clutch pedal four times, and gas pedal two times in total for the first corner in order to drop down two gears.
If he wanted to do one clutch downshifting, he only needed to press clutch pedal and the gas pedal two times respectively.

I know I’m going to regret responding but you’re wrong. He just dropped down two gears at the end of the straight. He’s not double clutching.

first corner. watch again
December 31st, 2009 at 1:15 am
ah, i was wondering why he was tapping on the brakes with his left foot on the straights
December 31st, 2009 at 1:37 am
He’s not double clutching, just doing a heel-toe rev match. There is one corner where he shifts down two gears and it *looks* like a double clutch but it really isn’t.
Double clutching is where you release the clutch with the transmission in neutral and then engage it again before selecting the next gear. It’s necessary when down-shifting a transmission with no sychro’s and help minimize synchro wear on those that have them.

No. He taps the brake pedal to “reset” the brake calipers. Not to warm up the brakes. Brake calipers can get knock off aligment from any lateral movements in the car.

Formula 1 cars still have clutches (its behind the steering wheel). I see why you say there is no clutch because modern formula 1 cars only have two pedals no longer three.

i feel like this is going to be a stupid question but do they change just the pole from the steering wheel to make the turning more sensative or do they change like the whole axxel

make sure when you apply the clutch you only push it down a couple of inches not all the way to the floor, for shifting while car is in motion. pushing the clutch all the way to the floor is the clutch break position only to be used when the vehicle is completely stopped, in order to put the gear box into first.
December 31st, 2009 at 5:18 am
not anymore now they have no clutch in formula 1
December 31st, 2009 at 5:52 am
apply the clutch to remove from 2nd gear then you release clutch with gear in neutral then apply clutch again while applying throttle to match the rpm to the speed of the tranny then shift into 3rd
December 31st, 2009 at 6:21 am
it’s nice to see him warm up his brakes before hard braking corners.

On a non-syncromesh transmission its done between gears to slow the shafts to allow the gears to mesh properly. You would push in the cluth, take the trans out of gear, let the clutch back out, the press the clutch back in, and shift into the next gear. Hence the name double clutching since you’re doing a double clutch action for each shift.

hey i get heel toeing but whats double clutching?
December 31st, 2009 at 8:39 am
whats double clutching?
December 31st, 2009 at 9:22 am
First time I’ve actually seen someone double clutch outside of a truck driver. Do these not have a tranny with synchros?
December 31st, 2009 at 9:46 am
It’s so slow…

This is not an F1, plus ALL drivers make corrections all the time, otherwise, they arenĀ“t pushing to the limit. See Senna’s driving during the late 80’s and early 90’s in this same track with an F1 and also his NSX testdrive.

he’s not very precise he leaves a lot of time on the table
